Why ChatGPT can't recommend your business

AI assistants recommend businesses they can describe confidently. If your site doesn't give them facts they can state, they quietly move on to one that does.

ai searchfundamentals

Ask an assistant to find you a plumber in Charlotte and watch what it does. It doesn’t rank websites the way a search engine does. It tries to describe businesses — what they do, where they work, whether they’re open, whether they handle the specific job you mentioned.

That’s a much higher bar than ranking. To rank, a page just has to exist and be relevant. To be recommended, a business has to be describable. And an assistant will not describe what it cannot verify.

The failure is silent

This is what makes it hard to notice. When your site is unreadable to an assistant, you don’t get an error. You don’t drop down a list. You simply aren’t mentioned, and the assistant says something reasonable about the businesses it could read.

Nobody tells you this happened. Your analytics look the same. Your Google ranking is unchanged. The only signal is an absence.

What “unreadable” actually means

It rarely means your site is broken. Sites that fail badly here usually look completely fine to a human. The problems are all in the layer humans never see:

  • The crawler was turned away. Your robots.txt doesn’t mention GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended. Some platforms block unknown agents by default, so silence reads as “no”.
  • The facts are in pictures. Your hours are in a graphic. Your service area is in a map embed. Your phone number is in the header image. A human reads all of it instantly; a crawler gets nothing.
  • The facts are implied, not stated. “Serving the Triangle since 1998” is meaningful to a local. To a machine it’s an unparseable string — it doesn’t know which towns that covers.
  • Your missing pages return success. A soft 404 answers 200 OK with an empty page. The crawler stores that page as real content and may quote it back later.
  • Nothing is marked up. Without structured data, there is no machine-readable statement of your hours, address, service list or price range — just prose the assistant would have to guess at.

Why “just write good content” doesn’t fix it

The usual advice is to publish more. That helps a human who has already found you. It does very little here, because the bottleneck isn’t the quality of your writing — it’s that the facts an assistant needs are not in a form it can lift and state.

You can have the best-written services page in your county and still be invisible, because “we’re available most evenings” is not the same as "opens": "17:00".

The fix is technical, and it’s finite

That’s the good news. This isn’t an ongoing content marketing programme. It’s a specific list of technical things — a crawler policy, a plain-text summary, structured data, real 404s, a valid sitemap, a canonical host — that either exist on your site or don’t.

Most small business sites fail six to ten of them. Fixing them takes a couple of days, and the result is measurable: you can scan before, scan after, and see the number move.

Run the free scan and see which ones you’re failing. It takes about twenty seconds and tells you exactly where you stand.
